Healthy Estonian Food Day.

On 16th December we made our final preperations for the healthy foods day.

On 22th December we had the healthy Estonian food day, where the students could learn about eating healthy foods.

The day started with Anne Kersna lecturing forms 4.-9. . At the beginning of the lecture she introduced a book titled Estonian Food. We found out a lot of interesting stories about food customs, food ingredients, their origin and healthyness. At the end of the lecture students could show what they had learned at the lecture. The day continued with preparing the dishes. Students made traditional Estonian dishes, served them in the school canteen and decorated their recipes. The judges evaluated how the dishes were served, how the food tasted and how well the recipes were decorated. The best cooks were forms 5, 7b and 7a students, whose dishes tasted delicious and were beautifully served.

There were also special prizes given out:

6b - the school cook added their food to the school canteen menu.

8 - best homemade food.

9 - simple and traditional.

6a - the most Christmass-like food.

The project team has to decide next year, which Estonian dish we are going to present to our project partners to taste.

In the evening we got together again in a fancy restaurant where we could order a three course meal.

On Saturday we went to Dublin by train. Our sightseeing day started with a bus tour. It was an open top double-decker. After the bus tour everyone got an hour to explore the city. We were also supposed to see a prison, but due to bad weather the trip was cancelled. After that we headed to the train station to catch a train back to the hotel and host families. Some of the students and teachers got off in Bray, the other in Greystone.

Meeting

Today we had the first more serious project meeting, where we discussed the following subjects:

1. Campaign "Switch it off!". The British had prepared some nice stickers which we sticked above switches in the halls.
On the first week of campaign (12.-18. Oct) we will read and record the electricity meter. The second week (19.-25. Oct) the school will be notified about energy consumption and the energy saving week begins. At the end of the week Janette and Sandra collect the electricity meter results and a conclusion will be made. 10 students are going to carry out the same experiment at home and on the 6th November the conclusions will be sent to Ireland.

2. National foods. It was decided to organize all-school competition for national foods/dishes. The students shall prepare a dish and take a picture of it. We will add more information about the making of the food, degustation and whether we should recommend the foods to foreigners.

3. Eco-tourism brochure. We will begin the campaign next half-term.

4. The project meeting will now start on Wednesday at 15.00.

5. The project meeting which will be held in Ireland was discussed.

6. As teacher Airi is leaving for a few years from school, then it was decided that the students shall uphold the blog by themselves. First Richard will start, to whom teacher Airi Metsaäär will teach blogging.

7. Online food survey. The Spanish teachers have made a very good nourishment survey, which can be filled in internet. At least 20 students are required to test it before 18. During the biology and English classes the teachers Evelyn and Meeli agreed to test it out with 5.-9. grade students. Teacher Airi will test it with 2. grade students.

Like mentioned earlier, the first meeting was very bust - many things were discussed and decided.
The meeting was attended by: Lauri, Ingomar, Reino, Janette, Sandra, Richard and teachers Meeli Jänes, Mall Niinemets, Evelyn Kurg, Edda Rei, Airi Metsaäär.

Project meeting in Estonia

Last week was very busy for us. Therefore we haven't put any new information here.

On 16th-20th September we had a project meeting in Estonia. All the partners came to visit us. It was nice and interesting time. We could meet some new friends and it was nice to see our old friends from previous meetings.

While there are 2 schools from Estonia who are in this project, our guests started their visit from Pärnu and ended in Kehtna. These two places are absolutely different - Pärnu is a town near the sea and Kehtna is an agricultural village almost in the middle of Estonia. But our guests from England told us that it was exciting to see the different places. It might be a bit complicated for the students who had to stay for 2 nights by the families in Pärnu and then for 2 nights by the families in Kehtna. But they managed it well.

The weather was sunny all these days. It rained before the meeting and it started raining again this night.

Project meeting in Turkey

27. May - 1. June we participated in a project meeting in Turkey, in the city of Yenifoca. Teachers Airi Metsaäär, Meeli Jänes as well as a 9th grade student Oliver Männik attended at the meeting. At the meeting we discussed what we had already done and what are the tasks we should fulfill at the project meeting in Estonia. We participated in an international eco-related conference in the city of Foca, where a representative of each country introduced their country's educational system and enviromental actions. At the conference Turkish enviromental scientists made a presentation of global issues. We got a lot of interesting ideas. The presentation about our school was made by the teacher Airi Metsaäär. During our visit in Turkey, we also went on some intresting tours.
The reception was warm, friendly and caring. The people there were very helpful.

We discussed the things we have done already and made some plans for the project meeting in Estonia on 17.-20. September. We also talked about the project meeting in Turkey.
In my opinion the meeting in Pärnu was useful and successful. Next time we will meet in Kehtna.

Stepcounters and film

9th graders (13 students) finished the stepcounter task in the end of December. Now the 8th graders are doing it.

We still go on with working on the film. Today the students made some pages with subtitels for different parts of the film. On 18th December they looked for some nice pictures for the film. On 11th December we watched the film and changed the ideas about adding something and how it should look like finally.
